I'm confused about the Judge being confused about the dates. Why do they matter? Can you be acting as an unregistered foreign agent as a retired General - but not as a National Security Adviser? Do you have to be employed by the government before you can be a traitor? I'm not familiar with US treason law.

treason in legal terms is specifically aiding an enemy of war during wartime...that's the main reason he walked back the comments a bit.

There's a difference. If you're a retired General you only have soft power, a National Security Adviser has some real ability to get things done so if you're taking money secretly and it's affecting how you act in your office that's a big deal.

Its the difference between a pharma company paying your neighbor to talk up a drug to you and them paying a doctor to talk up a drug to you.

Thanks for the reply.

Just to be clear then ... the standard requires hard evidence of a material benefit to one or both parties - not simply the presence of a clandestine relationship. Correct?

18 USC 2381 (Treason)

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

I think most people are not familiar with US treason law. Hence the show today.

Yes. 18 USC 2381. A far cry from forgetting to register your contract consulting work for another country.
