Frankly, I had to refresh my memory. While I know I studied a couple of his works in high school (which is long ago), the last time I remember truly studying him in depth is for a research paper I wrote in 8th grade. I vaguely recalled he had spent a lot of time in the South and remembered he died in Baltimore (then much more of a Southern city than it is now).
Seeing as how he essentially spent his entire formative years growing up in Richmond, I'd say he was a Southerner even if not by birth.
What clinched it for me is that biologically he was in no way a Yankee. His real parents were an English woman and a guy born in Baltimore. He just happened to be born in Boston.
He was about as Northern as Tolkien was South African.
