The US and the UK (with a few other countries, Israel included) were largely responsible for immense destabilization throughout the Middle East. I believe that many of the gruesome acts committed by the West in this region were to intentionally prevent anything like the Ottoman Empire from ever forming again. If there was a strong, modern and united military in that region, then western societies would not have such easy access to their oil. Give military support to each individual country and pin them against each other nearby country, who maybe you are also supporting (or maybe it's another proxy war). Easy pickings, easy to "justify" invasions and covert operations to install puppet governments.
If the US and UK stayed out of the Middle East and something like the Ottoman Empire was reborn, I'd bet that they would be extremely against the various terror attacks committed by Islamic extremists. Maybe to the point that they would just not happen often at all. Before you get pissed, yes I understand that the Quran does basically state that non-believers in other countries should be executed or enslaved by Islamist.
I'd counter that point with the fact that the Christian Bible also says some extremely fucked up shit, especially in the old testament. Western society arguably has become more "civilized" and the people who follow the related religions (hopefully) understand that many of those writings are dated (sorry Lutherns).
Many Islamist are currently angry for good reason - us westerners fucking them over hard. I can in a way understand why some turn to the fundamentalist ideals that Christians also turned to 1000 years ago.
Anyways...fuck current Muslims and Islamic idealists, but as a Western, our warmongering current and previous generations brought this upon ourselves. Fuck us and fuck them.

While that's a fair enough assessment, it doesn't address the present to any detail. I think we are locked in to the current state of affairs by the existential threat of jihadis with nukes. Our foreign policy hand is forced; if we don't actively prevent jihadi nuke acquisition, we're fucked. Active prevention perpetuates enmity. What's the out for that catch 22?

We're damned if we do an damned if we don't. There's a live powder keg out there and there really isn't a good way to prevent it from exploding.
