I have noticed this on a lot of articles that I have read in the last 6ish months or so. I mainly put it down to comment sections turning to a pit of insults most of the time.

I've seen much of the same. I often find the comments much more interesting than the articles themselves.
Besides all the hate and racism, in-between, you'll find the truth the newspapers are supposed to omit in the first place.
Yea its a shame really because now all the hate posts can be used as a reason to remove comment sections altogether.
I think this was also the reason why sites tried combining facebook profiles to comments but that didn't really help cut back on the hate either.
