They would have been arrested for 'failure to comply with LEO order', 'resisting arrest' or something equally stupid and they still would have gotten their stuff searched. Would have been good of the reporter-guy to mention that locking your car door as you get out is an option. Honestly, that's not something I had ever even considered, but you can be damn sure I'll do it if the situation calls for it.
Asserting your rights is always good. But choose your battles wisely.
Be sure to have also video in your car that uploads to a server that is password protected that they can't get to. And make sure the police know they are being taped this way. It will help you to survive. Who knows what could have happened if this guy wasn't videotaping. And we've all seen video's where cops break cameras and attempt to delete video. Be sure there's a backup.
Phones can record straight to online services. ustream, livestream, justinTV. Use these instead of recording to the phones memory. They can't access and delete these. Also don't tell them where the video is being streamed to. Make the streaming private so they can't see it. And be sure to make copies of the video when you get the chance.
A simple: "I have hidden video cameras that record and stream to an online password protected server" could save your life. If you think you need it. I think people do need these in their cars to protect themselves. Police use them too so it helps verify any situation when they pull someone over.
I've been toying with the idea of getting a 2 or 4-way road cam system- insurance offers a HUGE discount if I have it. Hadn't even thought about getting one that auto-uploads to a server though. One more cam to throw into the interior I guess. Excellent idea, much appreciated!

i wonder what would have happened if they had asserted their rights, locked the car door upon exiting and not playing ball with the "officers" search
