Diaspora is awesome, we are a little different in the sense that we are much more than just a social network. It is a Facebook, Ebay, Reddit, Quora, Meetup, Craigslist, Plenty of fish, Kickstarter, Airbnb, and a lot of other networks combined into one. There is a lot of cool functionality that makes us more of a portal than a social network:)
Very ambitious, but I like the stated goals. The big thing I always wonder about companies offering "privacy as a feature" is their funding model. What's the long term plan in this regard, while maintaining privacy?
Well after people input their social security numbers, bank details, credit card numbers, blood type, heart rate, how often they brush their teeth, shoe size, elementary school grade reports, last conversation with your grandma, we are totally private and we totally wont bug you to take a shower daily;p In our case, privacy means that no details will ever be sold, shared or given away, ever, to anyone. And you will never be tracked.
At the moment its just me financing this project, hopefully the kickstarter is successful and we can get an awesome first alpha launch. In any case i will keep on funding it myself no matter how much we raise. After that, advertising will bring in revenue to keep on developing it, there are a lot more features i have planned for the portal that will benefit users and group creators. Cryptocurrency/self destructing messaging/private posting/ability to purchase tickets and things with bit coins/a fundraising platform/video platform like youtube etc. etc. Lots of stuff in the works.
