If I was a powerful manipulated man I'd fund this myself under mutiple accounts and take control over its content before it even gets underway. Release it under the guise of social change and use the free info people post to help take out any resistance, since we're getting it the point where we'll start see people group up.
Who said anything about ownership? You simply fund the project and have them do what you would like them to do, you're the one keeping the lights on and they're going to listen to you.
People don't need much for encouragement when it comes to selling out.

Kickstarter does not work like that, funding does not mean you take ownership of the company.
