About nil, OP. Not sure it's a "conspiracy" but I don't think we would have developed any sense of cosmology without it.

Not always the case. The angular diameter of the moon during a solar eclipse depends on it's distance from the Earth and the position of Earth in its orbit around the Sun. More here
