Maybe nature makes people less crazy. Vermont is said to be 75% forest.

Actually, that is 100% true. I wrote some papers on it. The effects of nature on mental illness and mental health is scientifically observable. Schizophrenia and similar mental illnesses can be as much as two times as likely to occur in people who live in the city than in rural areas. Even higher if you happen to move to the city before the age of twelve or so. It's crazy, cities are major causes of mental problems and overall loss of wellbeing. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can significantly lessen symptoms of ADD & ADHD in patients already suffering from these illnesses. Ecopsychology, and Ecotherapy are fascinating subjects to me.

Easy answer, lack of sleep. Without sleep, there are many problems the mind faces. Increased pyschosis risk is one of them, but also certain memory and attention problems too.

Ehh, I think you're very close, When I moved to the city I couldn't (and still can't stand) the streetlights, I think that it's very possibly the quality of sleep. But there's a stress in dealing with large amounts of people I'm sure, a stress with the visual and physical qualities of urban scenery as opposed to rural. Just seeing and walking on some grass can help. I think not being able to see nature or the stars at night is truly why these issues exist. The reason I say that it's visual and possibly smell and touch related is we can actually see an immediate change in brain function and stress levels in just five minutes of being out in nature, so a five minute walk will actually show on a brain scan. Urban strolls of course don't show these changes. Sleep might be part of the mental illness factor, absolutely. But we were made to live in the natural. If you like I can track down my sources for my papers when I get my work back from the professor. It truly is fascinating stuff.
