The more I read about this, the more I am convinced the reason 90% of us are kept in the dark isn't necessarily nefarious, but because there is currently a coup occurring within the upper levels. If word got out, the people would have a vote of no confidence and the dominoes would begin to fall - and this is the problem. Once the people wake up and demand change, it could be the fascist cabal playing the libertarian minded 'messiah' to save the country that eventually destroys it. Either way, the government is currently fighting itself for control.
