Yea I've been wondering the same, just go through Iraq, perhaps it's too mountainous taking that route, or they're worried the Kurds might take control?
I'm not sure where Turkey wants it inserted into their country. There may be an argument for using just the top part of Syria along the boarder but going straight through isn't a necessity. Distance would make Syria the ideal though. Maybe cost is really easily effected by topography and maybe even foot hills we can't see on this map could be a factor. I'm no pipe engineer.
