Divide to conquer, and then divide to rule. This has been played out on so many occassions that I, like you, wonder why people continue to fall for the same bullshit.

There are 6 billion or so people on this planet, each with their own opinions and judgements which they essentially believe to be right. But how can any of us be 100% right - if one of us actually is, then the other 6 billion or so must then be wrong?

It frustrates me that we don't focus on our similarities such as wanting a safe and comfortable life where we are given time and support to explore our separate interests and talents for the benefit of each other.

Wonderfully said. People need to come together and focus on what matters instead of falling into political theatre.

That's exactly what I don't get. Doesn't everyone want to just enjoy what little time we have on this earth. Why spend it fighting one another and attacking one another? We're all gonna day. So let's make our time worth it.

No, not really. There are people out there far more focused on denying other people something they feel is wrong for those people to have, than on pursuing their own happiness. People are not at all reasonable. They are not rational. Presuming they are, and that they'll be happy to leave each other alone is folly.

Because history is cyclical human beings are stupid, all of us, me included...

That's why I can't read books about the rise and fall of empires anymore, it is too depressing. I used to love reading about Byzantine history, but watching their bureaucracy inflate to the point of total ineffectiveness, watching them destroy social programs at the expense of a huge defense budget which helped usher in their downfall, watching their currency inflate because they didn't have a proper understanding of economics, it just reminded me too much of New Rome (read: America), which is my country...

Meowth had it right back when I was a kid.

You shouldn't be depressed. It's all part of the life cycle. We don't cry over catapillars becoming buttetflies.

The universe as it is couldn't exist without fire and choas. Order comes after choas newly reborn and something better and new exists.

Yo but for real, Meowth is right.

Maybe we're not supposed to be in empires?

The introduction to Polybios discusses these cycles. When I read it at 15, I thought he was making excuses for Greek failure in light of Roman success. Now... yeah... I think he had it about right. But we're not empires. We're people. Yard apes! We have the same freedom as the monkey! We are not beholden to laws in books! We can steal the ripest of fruits, hump the most swollen of asses, and fling poo at all our enemies! We don't have to further the progress of New Rome. (Why would we ever pick Rome as the model? It's better known for its inevitability and doom than its enlightenment and continuity. Fuck it, Vandal tribesmen seemed like yard apes to Romans.)

Ar_Nimruzir ago

No, we are not. Our brains are primed for in-groups of no more then several hundred and we are simply glorified apes, but we can achieve so much if only we work for it!!

A great read, and an even greater master to learn from; Polybius ha much to teach us. It is a shame that standard western curriculum does not teach the great ancient Mediterranean thinkers...

But I do believe America is the new Rome, one of the reasons being it won't last...

Religion is the number one bullshit best seller.
How much money does it take to build a church/mosque/temple ?
Fuck loads!
Where does the money come from and why are these corporations tax exempt?

Bullshit sells and it sells really well if you can get enough people to say your bullshit is the shit.

escapefromredditbay ago
