I've thought this for a long time.. In this day and age, there NEEDS to be verification.. What we have right now is basically every one pushes a button or whatever to choose who they want to vote for, and at the end of it the government tells us "Bob Smith won and is now the president.".. How can we know for sure?.. And I think it is suspicious how all the presidential elections always end up as 51% vs. 49%..
Paper voting is much harder to rig. Say you want to put 10,000 paper votes into the ballot. That requires a lot of work and many people involved and it is easy to check, while a hack can be done without much trouble. ONE person can do it and it's impossible to check because votes are supposed to be anonymous anyway.Best case scenario is they catch it and make ALL votes void on the machine. But that might be used strategically anyway, because the only voting machines where it make sense to do any manipulation are places one might assume would vote for the opponent anyway.
