There are too many people involved which too many moving parts. Someone, somewhere would talk if this was fake. Same with Sandy Hook, 9/11, the moon landing. The real conspiracies are when there are very few people involved.
May have, but back on r/conspiracy I remember reading a post about the Manhattan Project and how two people in the US actually knew what was going on. Let me see if I can find it.

There were many involved in the Manhattan Project but only two people knew what was going on or why they were solving equations.
I believe that a conspiracy can be accomplished by lying and secrecy, especially to those involved.

Compartmentalization is a thing. However, too many people knew to much and the leaks were everywhere. The Manhattan Project had problems with leaks and sloppy scientists from the get go.
