It's a trend, but that doesn't take away from it's credibility. Someone expresses deep interest in this issue and a few people listen. They then feel new found passion about it and want to let others know. The internet makes it incredibly easy for any person to get information out to a lot of people and when it gets to a lot of people on Reddit you get the hive mind attitude.
Replace "Reddit" in my comment with any website and I'd say it still stands. As for news shows, I don't watch cable so I wouldn't know, but you're right that it showing up there all of a sudden is significant.
