Today, Breitbart posted a story accusing black rights activist Deray McKesson of assuming the shooter in yesterday's live TV incident was white. Breitbart did not say what may have caused Deray to believe this.
In fact, The Daily Beast and others reported and tweeted the headline "Police are hunting for the shooter, who is a white man dressed in all black." Deray took a screen shot of some of the tweets, and one of them included this link: thebea.st/1Va6RCI. Deray posted the screen shot in a popular tweet. Breitbart did not find this tweet by Deray worth covering, even though it could not be missed in a review of his tweets.
Today. this shortened link to The Daily Beast goes to a different story about the shooting. However, a search of the link at Google provided this cache, which clearly shows from The Daily Beast itself that such a story existed but was deleted or significantly altered.
To be sure that Brietbart knew exactly what it was doing in deceiving its readers:
Breitbart displayed a screen shot of the Deray tweet, which said "Some say 'disgruntled employee,' others say 'terrorist.' Whiteness will explain away nearly everything." However, Breitbart never mentioned the other tweets reporting a white shooter. It is curious that Brietbart would be investigating Deray's tweets and miss that one.
Stranger still, Breitbart never mentioned that the story in The Daily Beast was altered, and those related tweets were also deleted.

I had always assumed that I could trust Breitbart. But I am perpetually under a rock. Can anyone explain to me why, how Breitbart is untrustworthy (outside of this one instance)? Any specific writers/editors at fault or is it the site as a whole?

Breitbart has a well-earned reputation of being not only a partisan Republican spin machine, but one that is dishonest. To me, it is obvious from a quick glance at the home page.
Take this story, for example. I saw it posted here this morning and it did not seem right. All I had to do to find the first major problem was go search Deray at Twitter. From there, I poked around for a bit more to put in this submission.
I rarely or never actually went to Breitbart until I arrived here at Voat. People just don't take it seriously enough even to bother doing detailed studies on it. Or at least, I haven't read any.
If it weren't for the constant proliferation of that site here, I wouldn't give it a moment's attention.
