Manny factors play into it; empty places, places with friends and family but really what other objectives do you have?
A relatively peacful suburban population center somewhere in the south or with a high concentration of like minded gun owners would probably be quite survivable under most types of collapse.
Rural is fine too but its easier for a small group to pick off families that are further apart, being no more than 2 acres apart is what i would call suburban in this scenario.
