You can't hide from the Internet. Once the info spreads -- it spreads like wild fire. This sort of shit can't be swept under the rug anymore as it used to be done back in the day.
However, it's up to the people to make the final push.
It is spreading, however I do find a lot of people are so conditioned so as to violently reject any but the mainstream edition. But you are correct, it cannot be swept under the rug. This is exactly why TPTB are desperately trying to control the internet.
The Internet is a huge hive mind, and often as the case is (4chan, reddit, etc.) you'll have people online take corrupt governments/companies and put them back into their place. Corruption leaves a lot of trails, it's relatively easy to pick up the crumbs and pin them back to the offender.
Any scuttling of Internet freedoms would lead into a push back from people all around the world ranging into the hundreds of millions if not more. They can try, but in the end they will always fail.
You cannot control the Internet because as far as I'm concerned it's a giant living and breathing entity that far outweighs anything any government can throw its way.
