I've seen the case made to the opposite effect, world sailing championship competitors, pilots and extreme southern sailors like Admiral Byrd have all provided substantial evidence for me to suspect the distortion is extreme. Global flights do not take straight courses in southern hemisphere and GPS/ GLOBNASS have issues there. Professionals of all trades have come across events and circumstances that their textbooks told them otherwise. Easily explained by navigating on a flat plane with the North pole at its center so that East and West are simply circles.
