A properly fitted N95 mask filters down to 300 nm. The covid virus is a fraction of that. I quit wearing a mask a month ago. No one says shit.

implying people wash their hands before and after donning the mask

implying people don't shove the mask in their pockets/bag after use

implying surgical masks aren't for use in hospitals by trained professionals

implying these masks were designed for use by the general public

implying people wear the mask as they were designed to be worn

implying that masks are not a damp, warm environment that bacteria love to reproduce in

implying that people dispose of the mask properly after use

implying that people wear a new mask every time they wear one

implying that masks don't constrict breathing

implying that mandating masks by law isn't an egregious and authoritarian application of the law

implying people shouldn't be allowed to decide for themselves how to manage their own health

implying that people wash and dry non-surgical masks (cloth masks/homemade masks) after each use

implying that there is a scientific consensus among scientists and medics over the use of masks

implying that the scientific evidence that masks reduce viral spread is extremely weak at best

implying that the scientific advice was for the general public NOT to wear face masks (see Dr. Fauci stating this in the video linked below)

implying that goverments don't lie and distort the scientific evidence to fit their agendas

implying masks don't muffle speech making it difficult for the hard of hearing

implying covering the face isn't a huge barrier to communication

implying that people with a genuine medical condition don't get abuse in shops, public transport etc

implying that mask wearing isn't designed to demoralise people and make them more afraid

but I also believe that any country that is happy to weld people's front door shut to stop it spreading, and can test a city of 5 million people in a few days over a reported 12 infections, is going to be better than the rest of the world in coping with this. I'm not "defending China", I' just pointing out that by default, Totalitarian societies are much more effective at forcing a population to act towards a goal than any democracy could.

Imagine a virus much more infectious than this, China could nail everyone down for a month and kill it dead. Americans would still be demanding to sing in a church.

To a lessor extent that's what we are seeing now, America's cases are rising, other countries are levelling out. The only reason your society hasn't reacted yet is that it's not killing anyone you know.
