Yeah that does seem to be the consensus of opinion on the i'net ..

Fortuna Wolf @ ArsTechnicaForum.com says, "I have experience with pure titanium grades not the 6al 4v alloy which is more commonly used in surgical tools and aeronautics. Titanium is usually the color of aluminum or slightly darker but brighter than stainless steel, at a high polish pure titanium has a faint copper / brass tone.

It is highly corrosion resistant while its oxides and nitrides form a barrier tougher than titanium itself and are what makes titanium coated knives, Ti is slightly heavier than aluminum and slightly weaker than steel - significantly weaker than high carbon steel, unless you use the grade 5 6al4v alloy - it is also softer than steel.

It work hardens easily and requires annealing under inert gas. Titanium will dull more easily than high carbon steel because of that its strength / weight ratio is what makes it attractive, not strength alone nor hardness. However if you coated blades with titanium oxide or titanium nitride and then sharpened that, you would be in business because that is essentially a ceramic coating.

Could be titanium nitride coating, that will make an edge last longer if there is an edge already there. I made several knives out of several diffrent grades of titanium years ago, the edge holding ability Was fair to poor. They were nice looking.

Yeah right .. the Paolomanzi.info website under the heading The Pros & Cons of Titanium Knives says, "if a blade has a thick titanium coating and is properly sharpened you could go weeks or months before needing to sharpen it again" .. it sounds like the alleged "White House Source" who mentioned the Titanium connection was referring to the same tech being applied to the Guillotine blades.
