In the US there have been between ten thousand and sixty thousand deaths from seasonal influenza each year for the past ten yrs, most of the victims have been elderly or infirm, imagine the percentages in Italy are much the same.
Pneumonia is the most cause of death in the Western World, as ppl age particularly if they are in poor health their immune system finds difficulty coping with day to day stresses, thus when healthy ppl breath pneumonia spores in their body's immune system obliterates them instantly.
Cold weather slows the body's defense mechanisms so when temperatures fall the pneumonia spores find fertile ground and multiply, ppl with lingering "colds" who get a "touch of the flu" from time to time are at higher risk, as the flu becomes pleurisy becomes pneumonia and death follows, it is the natural order of things and part of the ageing process .. that's what I say anyway :)
