Alternative explanation:

The burn pit is real, but they are burning livestock. Millions of pounds of animals have likely starved to death at this point (assuming lockdown and unable to feed or sell). You also had thousands of people tossing pets out of windows when the news incorrectly said that you could catch it from pets. All those dead cats and dogs need to be burned somewhere.
