No. Grants are for people who have very low incomes. Here's a crazy idea; don't get students loans that you'll have a hard time paying back. You know, like the retarded people that go to an out of state school to become a public school teacher. Out of state tuition is at least double compared to an in state school. And instead of working part time while they're going to school they rack up huge credit card debt. No common sense or logic.
I bet the divorcee actually had a low enough income to qualify for a grant. You also have to consider the possiblity that their family members are helping them out too, but they don't report it on the grant application. If you are 26 then you are considered independent from your parents and don't have to report their income. Also if you have a child or are married no matter your age you're income is automatically considered independent of your parents income. I know that's not fair. A lot of people's parents have the money to help their kids, but they won't give them a dime.
