You have a good point, there are still many ways that Linux could improve as far as user friendliness is concerned but the thing as a grandma wouldn't be able to install Windows either and she wouldn't have to because it's already preloaded onto whatever laptop she buys. If you could easily buy a laptop with some LTS Linux distro pre installed onto it along with every gui app necessary for things like package management, general settings etc AND the correct drivers preinstalled (just like with Windows pre-installs), then that would change a lot for Linux. Most people that I know with computers, never mind just grandma, wouldn't be able to install Windows on their own. That's the edge that Windows has, convenience. It's the same edge that console gaming has over PC gaming. Windows is accessible to everyone because every hardware manufacturer and every major software company supports it (and in many cases supports only Windows). Maybe things have changed and definitely things are different in my country but even when I was in school, they only teach Windows, 'computer' education is actually Windows education to the point that people don't even know that something called 'Linux' exists. You get computer 'experts' who are actually just Windows experts and have very successful careers. Half the people with Android phones don't even know what Linux is. It's like it's being forced onto us and that is why it is so popular because I honestly cannot think of any other reasons, it's inferior to your average Linux build in almost every other way.
And I truly apologise for the wall of text response, I am currently worshipping Dionysus with a glass of wine, it's a religious thing.
I was addressing Linux as merely a hobbyist platform. The dominant OS on The Internet is not a hobbyist platform. I'm not talking about on the desktop, I mean the entirety of The Internet. Calling it a hobbyist platform is more than a bit understated.
Can Skype spy on me through the Snoopy band-aid covering my camera lens? I mean, it's that simple to defeat any spy hijacking programs that might infiltrate my Windows 10.
If I wanted even more privacy, I guess I could insert an unconnected 2.5 mm plug into the microphone jack, but I have no idea why anyone would want to eavesdrop on me anyway. I imagine it would make the most boring listening ever created.
If that were true Office for Mac would have collapsed Windows' marketshare. I say that as a mac user who transitioned to Mac from Linux. The last version of Windows I bought was 3.1. However, I'm now considering a transition to Windows 10. I like the Surface Pro. And my workflow requires Adobe and Autodesk software. And man if that stuff doesn't run like a dog on MacOS X. Never mind paltry plugin support. Fact is, Windows has the software ecosystem. If you want to get work done with tools other people will pay you consulting fees to know and use, you're stuck with creative software on Windows.
If the OS doesn't correctly work without it then that really is a cause for concern because why? I have a feeling it will be something that's easy to remove with a tool like WinReducer.
Microsoft themselves are dodgy for these same reasons with or without Skype. If the masses still seem to think that Windows is the only OS in existence then the fact that Skype is built in to it isn't going to stop anyone from supporting micro-soft-cock.
At this point the ones that need to stop buying Windows are the PC and laptop manufacturers that sell their products with Windows preloaded. People in general are pretty stupid and don't follow news and history or anything, they just consume, consume and consume some more. And they will carry on using Windows as long as they are lead to it like sheep being lead to a field.
Just try to explain to people why they should change the way they do things and you will be labelled as a tinfoil hat wearing nutcase without them even bothering to check the facts.
As long as the TV keeps telling people what is popular and fashionable and right, they will OBEY. Does popular music become popular because people just happen to like it or is it because it's the only music that is shoved down our throats? Are fashionable clothes fashionable because people truly like it or because your cosmopolitan magazine told you so? It's all fucking forced onto us and we're all too stupid to realise that what's 'hot' is being dictated to us by the people who make all the money from it being 'hot'. Microsoft and Windows are no different to this.
I'd love to believe in grass roots change completely but sometimes the sickness needs to be removed from the top levels first before anything can ever hope to change.
Skype is one of the worst programs I've ever used. I game a lot and many have advised me to avoid it because it has flaws that allow for people to get information on you lik your ip so they can ddos you in game. That's one flaw I know of, I'm sure there's more, so for Microsoft to force it into windows 10 is pretty scary considering it's well known to have weaknesses.

Only if you continue to preach that kind of rhetoric.

Without Linux nothing would work. NOTHING.

No worries! Use Linux and if you need to use Skype then run it inside a Docker container so it can't look at any of your data!

Wow. At first click the google search showed no hits.

They could use the same keylogger that came with Windows 10 Preview.

Your current version of windows can spy on you just fine. Don't sweat it.

When MS first introduced MSIE, didn't they claim that it was not removable because it was so tightly integrated into the OS, or some such bullshit?
They might try to pull that stunt again with Skype...

I would imagine it comes as removable bloatware, or a component you can disable like Internet Explorer. I don't see a plausible third option.
