Kubrick helped fake the moon landings. They used backscreen projection which was a favorite technique of his. The movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, which came out one year before the first moon landing in 1968, was his testing run to prove that space missions could be simulated convincingly enough on film. The original credits to this film include thanks to NASA and other paramilitary organizations.
The film The Shining is rife with clues about faking Apollo, which is explored in the documentary Room 237.
Kubrick insisted that Eyes Wide Shut be released on the 30th Anniversary of the Apollo moon landings. In this film he explored the secret sexual perversion of elite circles, and the film was heavily edited before release to the point that the plot is hardly coherent.
He died in his “sleep” of a “heart attack” hours after delivering a print of that film, his last film, to the studio.

If you are interested, I have the original Kubrick's screenplay. Cruise dies at the end during breakfast, after drinking poisoned tea by Kidman.
