The main problem is that this was done with no explanation. If I'm wrong about this someone post a link.

Exactly, it was communicated poorly.
Was something said? I missed it?
Oh no, by that I meant I hadn't heard it communicated to us at all.
It hit me by surprise that acccount registrations had potentially been disabled for so long.
