why in earth would anyone want a 3d printed gun. From what ive read they are very expensive, only shoot 0ne round once. The material would not hold up safely to shoot a second. The total cost with set up over 1500$.

So 3D guns are as probable as they are practical. the 3D gun story, which plagues the press at least once a year, is solely for the (((Fear))) factor of illiterates. Just my opinion thats all.

From what I understand, the gig goes basically like this:

  • 3D print the parts you need
  • stick the parts into green-sand molds
  • cast the parts using the methods detailed in David Gingery's books
  • put the parts together
  • bang bang shooty fun

even worse than i heard previously. You could buy recievers and low part kits all day long for that type of money and time investment. Hell you buy a stripped AR lower for 50$ or a polymer80 pistol lower for 150$.

sure if you are rebuiding 16th century flint lock or if you are doing it out of a sense of hobby- like blacksmithing...then why not. The better subject would be 3d suppressors- they are more expensive, require ATF registration and are outright banned in certain states. NOw that would be an eyeopener.

Depending on the design--which is presumably available in open source--why the fuck not?

I'm sure you know how a silencer works, but I'll sum up real quick for those who might be following along at home.

In modern firearms, the propellant for the bullet is gunpowder, which when ignited turns into super-hot gas moving super-fucking-fast. Supersonically fast, as a matter of fact. That's why gunshots are so goddamn loud -- all that supersonic hot gas makes a big bang when it comes out the barrel. The trick with a suppressor is to trap and slow down the gas to subsonic speeds, so it makes less of a bang.

Suppressors can be made from all sorts of materials, but the good ones are usually metal, with some sort of wadding inside them to muffle the bang.

I can absolutely envision a suppressor made from 1" steel tube with holes bored out of it using a drill press, packed with a wad of high-temp resistant 3D-printed filament--something like a coarse, semi-rigid sponge--with a hole in the middle of the cylinder for the bullet to travel.

well i have to say you are changing my mind about the whole 3d printing business, thank you. Do you know how they rifled barrels in the begining? I mean i can look it up but you seem to know a lot about this.

3D printing is fucking god-level technology, yo. It can be used for all sorts of interesting things.

Rifling is basically the operation of cutting a spiral groove (or three) down the center of a gun barrel. You essentially use a drill-and-tap set, with a very, very, very, very, very long bit. In olden times, a pattern was made from wood to accomplish this. See Foxfire vol. 5

No, more like they used a 12x scale model of the barrel, made of wood, to drive a bit through through a barrel already bored out to the correct size, to give the borehole the proper twist, usually 1:12.

i wouldn't even know where to begin listening to a podcast. North woods-Nice. have you ever considered HAM radio broadcasts. but yea sign me up. I wonder how much a 3d printer costs-1000's id imagine. ill check.

Abso-fuckin'-lutely. I'm working on putting together an SDR setup and an antenna so it'll be ready to go once I get my Technician's license.

As for where to begin, lots of websites (like soundcloud.com for example) have a whole podcast section, and you can often download episodes for free. See if there's anything that appeals to you. But I'll definitely PM you where to find mine when it drops.

As for the cost of 3D printers: yeah, they've come way down in price lately. This is an unmitigated good thing.
