Slightly off topic but does anyone recognise how surreal and fake shows and movies look like in HD? It's something I can't quite put my finger on but the way the camera pans around and the high fidelity of a scene screams "fake" to me.

do you mean the image looks blurry? or theres not enough frame rate? there could be purposely added blur, and sharpening motion filters, or accidental effects introduced by the camera and your tv screen. maybe to filter picture noise and static. or for the psychological sub conscious effect.

and the zoom and detail dont correspond to reality, near and distant things, both appear in the same level of detail and sharpness, not realistic, the eyes cant focus because the camera determined the focus distance. theres compression artifacts in the video as well.

the sound also fails to produce a realistic ambience.

they try to compensate for their lack of filming skills, by using high definition cameras and HD surround sound, and for the lack of notable visuals, pan the camera around a whole lot. the camera and tvs are HD, but the picture is still flawed to some extent, i think it actually becomes worse everytime they up the resolution.

then again everything on tv could be CGI, your favorite actors maybe they dont even exist.

I think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head.
