I was working a job at a local supermarket chain. I was in management, meaning salary, not hourly, and was doing OK, but not great. Family owned company, run by a father-son combo. There were 600+ employees. Old man suffered stroke and died unexpectedly. There had been talk of an ESOP, of many things, but those died with the old man.

IRS comes in , and because the old man hadn't spent a few mil on lawyers, they eviscerated the company as if every cereal box, piece of deli meat, etc. was "personal property" and assigned the family a $7 million tax bill. The estate outside of the stores was worth less than $1 million.

Guess what? To "Tax the Rich", 600+ people lost their jobs when the stores closed/sold in order to pay the taxes.

The government isn't there to help you, it's there to control/ruin you.
