It might actually help them get away with the loot to release them. The authorities' focus goes from recovering the bounty to damage control on the leaked info.
Exactly, a payment would also act like an admission as well.
'x paid to have these documents hidden, but here they are anyway'
This goes a long way in legitimizing anything released.
