The telescopes are pretty straightforward, their hardware (reaction wheels, chips) has a limited lifespan in space, and some of the redundancies are now starting to fail entirely. They're mostly just getting old and need replacements (new satellites) with better tech.
However, you don't evacuate facilities and stay hush-hush because of child porn, in that case you're arresting people and taking disk drives for evidence in the FBI proceedings, but not much else. But it seems to be a favorite excuse right now to get people to just go into NPC-mode and stop asking questions, eventually forget.
So, "we" can rule out the technical failure (3 at roughly the same time sounds unlikely to begin with, while not impossible), which leaves us with an attack on the structures mentioned in the OP, or a deliberate shutdown of the said structure
Now adding the pedo story to the mix to justify the evacuation of the entire site and a couple of civilian installations near by if memory serves, which included the local post office, (correct me if I'm wrong), the latter (deliberate shutdown) seems more likely
But why?
To prevent people from seeing something and reporting on it to anybody?
Or is it just to make some people, like us, focus on that story instead of another event happening in roughly the same timeline?
The only way an evacuation makes sense is that the mere presence of people there, and what they may learn, is too hazardous to permit (given whatever agenda is afoot). It wasn't a chemical/gas leak, it wasn't bioterrorism, it wasn't fire, it wasn't anything! Even if one person did get every computer in the system serving up CP, they'd have agents all over the place dragging computer hardware around. But the drone footage showed absolutely fuckall was going on up there.
If I had to take a wildass guess? Chinese malware got into Federal systems and were acting as an intel-gathering system. That would would look very bad for the US and stoke the fires against China, when the narrative is supposed to be going against Russia. Doubly so if this is implicated in that Chinese supply chain hack on US servers that people are going back and forth between calling "real" and "fake".

What else could it be?

Just another day in this fucked up world of ours.

Maybe those bases were infected, but they weren’t really just observation. They were something else entirely.
