This article is garbage. The researcher , Tom Secker of Spyculture, who filed the actual FOIA for those documents isn't even mentioned.

Here is a link that I submitted earlier with links to the actual documents.

This is not something new to be fair. The military has traded access and assistance on military oriented films for some time in exchange for positive exposure. While I'd prefer they didn't, I can't say I fault them for restricting access to productions that are critical or hit to close to home.

I didn't know that they had the authority to censor fictitious movies...

If a movie has military equipment in it chances are the military is using it as a propaganda tool to try and recruit young and impressionable minds. They won't allow their equipment to be used in movies that make them look bad.

Oh, I realize that. Top Gun was probably the best recruiting tool they've ever had. I know they've been a big part of a lot of other movies as well, such as the terrible movie battleship. The difference between that and censorship is that the directors willingly do it for a big fat paycheck, as opposed to avoiding some fine for not painting the US military in a good light.

In May of 2012 the law that forbade the US govt from propagandizing to its own citizens was repealed. http://www.businessinsider.com/ndaa-legalizes-propaganda-2012-5
