I love how the article fails to account for the value of the 21,000 jobs that have been created by Space X, Tesla Motors, and SolarCity. Count me in for any programs that not only creates jobs but advance humanity in the areas of science and technology, the returns on this money will most likely be priceless in the long run.
How do you feel about Monsanto doing very much the same thing, and then laying intellectual claim to technologies paid for in large part by the taxpayers?
It might be an apt comparison if Musk didn't do the exact opposite with a lot of his patents by making them open. link He realizes that the patent system is broken and that technology advances greatest when it is shared.
I would still feel better if there were a more formal system in place seeing to it that taxpayers were treated more like shareholders. We shouldn't have to rely on the good intentions of those who receive public subsidy.
