A fire after business hours on a Sunday when they're pretty damned sure nobody's inside? Yes, be suspicious of this. Question remains: What artifacts were destroyed?

That's exactly what I'm thinking, and probably some stuff was meant to be destroyed, too. It's also possible that real artifacts were removed a long time ago and frauds put in their place.
