Theory: After his resounding success in various ventures Musk was offered entry into the global elite. He only would have had to do something horrible on camera such as murder a child. With the blackmail secured the group would have felt confident enough in its ability to control him to make use of his companies and ideas.
He refused but was too smart to publicize the offer. (which was made way too carefully for him to have evidence of even if he wouldn't have died in a tragic accident) As a result billions have been poured into shorting his company and trying to get him prosecuted for this or that. They want a piece of that sweet asteroid action. Their bet is that there are enough heavy metals and rare earths in the asteroid belt to make them trillionaires.

i always wondered how the economics of that would play out. if you got your hands on a massive horde of rare metals and went to market with them, the prices would fall through the floor
youd have to trickle it out, like the way diamond cartels do it

Only difference between them and diamonds is that they have real, tangible value. It could lead to an explosion in production the likes of which we've never seen.

I think that if you let the prices for a thing fall a little bit, people will start to invent new uses for that thing. Also, if your competitors can't lower their prices, then they go out of business, meaning you now get 100% of the market.

You would not even have to pace yourself, if the former market total is less than a millionth of what you are holding. There are supposed to be single asteroids out there with several times more valuables than what our whole planet bares. And there are (supposedly) countless asteroids.
Who cares if platinum sells for $1 instead of $700, if you have 7000 times more platinum than anybody else?
