The 'whole giants were real' conspiracy is fascinating. One day I want to finish reading the massive Book Forbidden Archeology by Michael A. Cremo and Richard L. Thompson - there is a lot of evidence (of varying quality) to this theory but that book is one of the best I've come across although it predates this incident by a couple of decades.
It gives the god-tards something to beat their chest about. Even if there are actually a secret race of giants living in caves, what does that add to our understanding of the world? Not much. There are conditions that can cause one person to grow huge.
