In the late 70's a news reporter did a segment about metropolitan state hospital norwalk,Ca and how patient were being mistreated. LA county sheriffs and other emergency vehicles were used to remove patients to surrounding hospitals. I recall some patients being chained to beds and some laying in beds of shit and piss. Police even found dead bodys in janitor storage room. Google metropolitan state hospital norwalk and you can still find cruelty going on

Chaining them to beds and making them lie in filth is unacceptably cruel.

Kicking them out onto the street to fend for themselves when they can't think properly is just as unacceptably cruel.

I remember the staff would use electroshock therapy as a form of punishment and doctors would make bets on how much a person could take till they died. Living on the streets is by far better than what the news told back then and Googleing I see not much has changed.

The homeless I saw every day didn't seem any better off.

It's really a conundrum: they take meds, feel better, stop taking meds because the side-effects suck, feel worse, lose control of their life and wander the streets unmedicated until they attack someone and get arrested.

It'd be better if somebody forced them to take their meds, but is it justifiable to take away their freedom like that?

All I know is the homeless are much more likely to have a psychiatric issue.
