it depends really, I mentioned in another comment that house building materials are highly flammable. Everything is kiln dried, and furniture results in a flash fire. it really only takes minutes for a house to burn down like that.. and the ash is just normal
the trees water supply has no where to escape, so it cannot dry out fast enough to burn. Are the trees damaged? absolutely, im surprised that the leaves have not wilted away yet. But trees can and do frequently survive fires.
Also, most those houses where all probably build at the same time, same materials.

yes, it needs to be dried out first. If you place it in a fire that's already going, it'll get dried out and burn.
