Wernher von Braun was a Nazi, assimilated into the USA after WW2 - Operation Paperclip. He said 'It would take a rocket the size of the empire state building to go straight to the moon.' The Russians had the first satellite in orbit (Sputnik 1), the first animal (Laika the dog), the first cosmonaut (Yuri Gagarin) and the first double and triple teams. They had clocked 5 times more manhours than the Americans - Even landed an unmanned ship (Luna 9) on the moon before America. But never decided to go... The deadly radiation belt surrounding Earth (Van Allen belt) is still a problem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlXG0REiVzE Here's Alan Bean (Apollo 12) unsure if he went through it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2FTZhyuJy8 So... America only ever went during tricky Dicky's term (6 times in 3 years) never to return again. The soviets just ditched their project. Then you have all the strangeness; Weird shadows going in all directions. The 'C' rock. No crater from the landing module. No dust on the landing pads at all. No stars - the astronauts forgot about them, then later remembered. Waving flag on the moon. NASA 'accidentally' deleted the originals. Fake moon rock given to Holland.

I lean to the side of believing the moon landing was real, but it did always seem odd to me that they would just "lose" the original tapes. They seem kind of important.
