In Afghanistan farmers are "forced" to grow poppies because they are prohibited from growing other crops that may compete US products. This is a concession to big agricultural interests in the US. To make matters worse the US military has been put into the position of actually defending the poppy production. Maybe this is changing with the recent US raids on some select poppy fields or maybe it was a public relations move - who knows?
