Actually any fuel that would leave behind an ionized exhaust would do the trick. Potentially even any fuel that has a conductive by product would work. Liquid oxygen with liquid hydrogen, commonly used as rocket propellent, leaves water behind. Very conductive. This dense trail of water vapor suddenly bridging the insulation barrier between atmospheric layers with different electric potentials could easily induce a current. Exactly like completing a circuit. The plasma is formed by the movement of electrons along that conductive path and naturally form a spiralling pattern to preserve energy and efficiency, in other words that's just how electricity moves.

As for wormholes, I don't believe they're possible for the same reason I don't believe black holes are possible. I'm unconvinced. The math doesn't check out.
