My hypothesis is that every car company starts off and builds its name to be "the best" before selling out and causing some kind of scandal they won't live down until every other car company has a scandal, then they have another chance at the top spot. Kind of a cyclic slow rise to greatness before selling out and making fools of themselves, and the cycle restarts.
Audi was there some years ago, now their cars are cheap shit. Toyota was there before that, and their cars accelerated out of control causing a news scandal, now their cars are shit.
