You've also got to realize where post-war Jewish population figures were ultimately coming from. The AJC was a highly-partisan organization -- the equivalent of AIPAC at the time -- and this information was of great strategic importance. It's not like they presented statistical studies. The "six million" number was established in the media, not through some sort of rigorous demographic methodology...

Some trivia which may or may not be of significace -- further research is required. There was a Zionist organization which was responsible for illegal / off-book emigration of Jews from Europe into Palestine before the war. We know that organization today as Mossad. It seems unlikely they did not continue this role in the immediate post-war chaos, moving a far more willing European Jewry out of their European misery... (see Weckert's book on this page.)
