I won't go into detail in this post but I thought I would bring something interesting to your attention. I have been following cryptocurrencies for a while now, believing a new world currency will be created through the emergence of FinTech.
CONTEXT
1988 Economist Magazine "Get Ready for a World Currency by 2018"

Interesting things were said in today's IMF Seminar on Fintech that compelled me to share what I believe might be the foundation of the next global reserve currency.
Research and look into XRP/Ripple, they have advisors for Trump, IMF, FED, etc.

Yup Ripple is the top contender for the IMF currency and has been since 2013. They merely needed to flesh it out more as a fully controllable protocol to international and local banks alike.
To add to your hunch, adoption will not likely be, "Oh so annoying, why must our government do this to us", rather:
If you create a Ripple wallet, you will receive your universal basic income, which is where many nations are headed, and/or medical insurance services in one portal.
Helicopter money is ridiculous when you consider a controlled digital ledger and associated currency is fully readable by the government tax agencies and banks.
This way, most people would be a bit daft to not register.

Never ripple. The are so many coins not premined.

Another interesting avenue is the exchange stabilization fund. Some very interesting videos to be found here -> https://youtu.be/2ssrcD5GdPQ?list=PL7D36AB716AAE3D89
Sorry if this has being shared before...
