It's not just that. People get desensitized by a million news stories a week, by the news always presenting every single story as an 'outrage' or a big deal, to the point that many people don't even hear it, and those who do pay attention may not be able to tell whether it is legit news and outage or yet more garbage.
Then when a story does pick up traction, these people and organizations pay companies that are essentially professional shills. Those companies flood social media, reddit, and many other things with 'news' stories either distracting from the big news or stuff that tries to de-legitimize it.
Creating seeds of doubt in people's minds has two effects : many people without first hand knowledge will now hesitate because they can't prove the shill stuff is wrong, so what if it's right? And dumb people can be conned to easily get on the perpetrators side because they're more susceptible to emotional exploitation and tribalism.
Add in the branch of psychology that deals with teaching businesses and people to exploit the human mind for marketing, etc, and it's a huge new ball game. All these people do is have to get a firm to successfully create the public impression that a particular story or line of thinking is a conspiracy theory and many people will stuff their heads in the ground to get away from it. Why? Because these same people have gone to great lengths to cultivate public perception of people who believe in conspiracy theories so that doing so will be social suicide. They them exploit their own creation to control what people will be receptive to hearing and believing.
I know I'm just some random Redditor and no one has a reason to believe me, but I speak from first hand knowledge. There are secrets known about our world and our people that people would never believe even if they were shown irrefutable proof because they've been carefully made to experience disgust and rage at the notion of it, and this careful tailoring of perception is done through many aspects of normal media and in innocuous ways.
The worst part is, basically everyone reading this will think it's talking about other people and they, the reader, is an exception. You're not. If you so much as own a TV, you're already part of the machine.....and I bet you're now thinking this is just a conspiracy theory and you're feeling the urge to scoff at it and dismiss it and say things to make sure others know you're smarter than it. And so the machine keeps turning.
