Turbos and superchargers are exploiting additional energy found in hot compressed exhaust gas and the additional oxygen pumped in to the combustion cycle respectively. On the one hand that represents energy already created by the engine and on the other it represents energy found in the additional O2 being forced into the engine. Both take energy to run which is presumably offset by the additional energy they can harness.
