Friend built a rig to crack hydrogen out of water, as supplemental fuel. Uses excess generation capacity of the alternator. Adds a bit of power/mileage. Not a magic bullet. That's the reality of the available technology.
It's within margin of error for gasoline vehicles controlled by humans in unpredictable conditions. It's just extra weight and extra drain on the engine. Zero benefit guaranteed.
When you are idling around under part load, you are still spinning everything. It is a minor but quantifable gain. He's been fucking around with this for around 20 years. As I FUCKING STATED "not enough of a gain for most folks to bother." There still are some minor gains. I also pointed out I do not believe the numbers of the person I linked with a Web page about it. You are wrong on this. I'll state that unequivocally.
Yeah their claim makes sense but then you consider a turbocharger makes a car faster by using the exhaust, so the claim that you can't be more efficient by utilizing waste doesn't hold up.
I don't know much about cars though so correct me if I'm spouting out my ass
Most of the time, internal combustion engines are not operating very efficiently, same as far as all systems invloving ICEs. Illustrative example of salvaging from otherwise waste: Piston engine aircraft gained speed by turning exhaust gases into thrust...Yeah, extra 50-75 hp through exhaust design of 1500hp aircraft engines wasn't much, but it was something...
My friend has a rolling road dyno at his shop. He's instrumented all his fucking around. There are gains where there otherwise would be pure waste. Of course, if you just wanted more power, there are better routes like NOS...
The extra hassle and plumbing isn't worth it to most, but then we live in a society that has accepted corn alcohol dimishing the caloric value of our gasolines...

You do realize that extra draw requires extra power from the engine, right? No free lunches. He's spending more energy than he's gaining.

He gets a minor bump in power and mileage. There is no free lunch, but potential minor gains, depending on how done.

The thing to remember is that turbos and superchargers are proven tech, but yet there is neither on a Prius ;-)
Gas is REALLY cheap right now. You aren't going to see this sort of tech when it won't make much financial difference to end users.
