There are people who have attempted to disable and remove ME. It's pretty difficult .. lots of things that, if you chance, will just brick the motherboard. There are a lot of signature and checksum checks.

Go google "intel management engine security".
Also, a way has been found to disable the engine. Note that it may also deactivate any late version of Windows (many W7 installs included) and not let you reactivate them.

The management engine's potential for backdooring is well known. AMD has a similar setup.
