I think that a lot of people are just too busy just trying to survive to really pay attention to what is going on. When they get a short break from working it's a lot easier to just turn on the TV and forget about everything else.

Maybe I am just weird, but I enjoy talking politics and conspiracy after work. Intelligent conversation is way better than TV or games for me.
